cr:1.8.4

A conditional effect is an effect that is dependent on a condition to be met. A conditional effect is typically written in the format “(If / During) [CONDITION], [EFFECT],” where CONDITION is the condition that must be met for the EFFECT to be generated/applied. If EFFECT is a list of two or more effects, each effect is a conditional effect with the same condition.

Example: Heart of Fyendal has the text “if you have less {h} than an opposing hero, gain 1{h}” which is a conditional discrete effect that is generated only if the the player has less {h} than at least one opposing hero.

Example: Flic Flak has the text “If the next card you defend with this turn is a card with combo, it gets +2{d}.” which is a conditional continuous effect that is applied only if the next card the players defends with that turn has the combo ability.

Note: Cards printed before 2022 have also used the format “If [EVENT and/or STATE] [EFFECTS]” to denote a triggered effect.[6.6]

  • cr:1.8.4aA conditional effect, written in the format “Otherwise [EFFECT],” is an effect that is conditional on the opposite of a preceding conditional effect or the failure of a preceding effect. This effect’s condition is met only when the preceding effect’s condition is not met, or the preceding effect fails.
  • cr:1.8.4bA conditional effect, written in the format “[EFFECT] unless [OPPCONDITION],” is an effect that is conditional on the opposite of the OPPCONDITION. This effect’s condition is only met when the OPPCONDITION is not met, or the OPPCONDITION is an effect that fails.[1.8.9] If the OPPCONDITION is an effect instead of a condition, it is an optional effect.
  • cr:1.8.4cA conditional effect, written in the format “[EFFECT] while [CONDITION],” is an effect that only applies as long as CONDITION is met. The CONDITION is evaluated at all times while the effect exists. If the effect applies to one or more subjects, CONDITION is evaluated per subject.
  • cr:1.8.4dA conditional effect, written in the format “if [CONDITION], [EFFECT], [ADDCONDITION], [ADDEFFECT] ...” is a collection of two or more effects that are only generated if the condition is met for each respective effect. Typically, the CONDITION fully specifies an amount required to met the conditional for generating EFFECT, and each subsequent ADDCONDITION will specify a different but related amount required to met the conditional for generating its respective ADDEFFECT. The CONDITION and each subsequent ADDCONDITION are evaluated all at once before any of the effects are generated.
